Dick Shuma has a 35+ year career advising corporate clients on capitalization structures, value enhancing business strategies and alternatives to efficiently realize on the value that they have created. Through his career, he has represented both corporate and investment banking disciplines leading and participating in a wide range of traditional and leveraged financings, strategic advisory engagements, buy and sell-side M&A engagements and various other capital raising engagements. Through the past 8-years he has focused his advisory work heavily on the ESOP as a transition vehicle. He continues that body of work at Prairie Capital Advisors.
He is a frequent speaker within the ESOP community as well as guest lecturer and panelist in the corporate finance, valuation and M&A disciplines at the University of Chicago, Northwestern University, DePaul University, The Loyola University Family Business Center, The Entrepreneurship Institute, and multiple other related organizations.
Prior to joining Prairie Capital Advisors, Mr. Shuma was a Managing Director at BMO Harris Bank serving a wide range of functions in the Leveraged Finance/ Private Equity, Investment Banking, traditional senior lending, and General Advisory disciplines. He had been instrumental over the long term in bringing advice and counsel to middle market clients as head of BMO’s Financial Advisory Services Group and as the lead of BMO’s ESOP practice group.
Dick has co-authored a recently published work “Here, Take the Wheel,” a unique book offering succession planning stories and insights from business owners. He has held successive terms as President of the Bankers Association for Corporate Finance, a trade group comprised of select senior management of the nation’s largest regional and super-regional banks.
He is the creator and owner of Chicago Software Solutions – an independent business offering deep corporate finance training and robust corporate finance software providing quantifiable insights into capital structure, valuation, economic profit, acquisition analysis, strategy alternatives and sensitivity analysis around each.
Mr. Shuma holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Marquette University with further studies in the Mechanical Engineering discipline at the University of Illinois.
