The Team Behind Prairie Capital Advisors

Our Team

Richard Shuma

Managing Director

Dick Shuma joined Prairie Capital Advisors in 2016 and is a shareholder in the firm. He is instrumental in developing Prairie’s ESOP sell-side and capital raise practice. For over 35 years, he has advised corporate clients on capitalization structures, value-enhancing business strategies and alternatives to efficiently realize the value that they have created. Throughout his career, Dick has represented both corporate and investment banking disciplines by leading and participating in a wide range of traditional and leveraged financings, strategic advisory engagements, buy and sell-side merger and acquisition (M&A) engagements and various other capital raising engagements. For over a decade, he has focused his advisory work heavily on the employee stock ownership plan (ESOP) as a transition vehicle.

Dick is a frequent speaker within the ESOP community and has been featured as a guest lecturer and panelist in the corporate finance, valuation and M&A disciplines at the University of Chicago, Northwestern University, DePaul University, The Loyola University Family Business Center, The Entrepreneurship Institute and many other related organizations. Dick also serves on the Executive Committee of the Illinois ESOP Chapter.

Professional Experience

Prior to joining Prairie, Dick was a Managing Director at BMO Harris Bank serving a wide range of functions in the Leveraged Finance/Private Equity, Investment Banking, traditional senior lending and General Advisory disciplines. As head of BMO’s Financial Advisory Services Group and the lead of BMO’s ESOP practice group, he was instrumental over the long-term in bringing advice and counsel to middle-market clients.

Dick co-authored Here, Take the Wheel, a unique book offering succession planning stories and insights from business owners. He has held successive terms as President of the Bankers Association for Corporate Finance, a trade group comprised of select senior management of the nation’s largest regional and super-regional banks.

Dick is also the creator and owner of Chicago Software Solutions – an independent business offering deep corporate finance training and robust corporate finance software, which provides quantifiable insights into capital structure, valuation, economic profit, acquisition analysis, strategy alternatives and sensitivity analysis around each.
