A&D M&A entered the second half of 2026 amid significant activity across both commercial aerospace and defense markets. Increasing aviation demand and aircraft production activity, alongside rising defense spending requirements for strategic rearmament, sustainment and investment in critical industrial capabilities, are reshaping priorities across the broader A&D sector. These conditions are directing attention to businesses positioned to support fleet sustainment, domestic defense production and the expansion of mission-critical defense manufacturing capacity.
Several structural trends continue to shape the outlook for these segments:
- Aging fleets and delayed new aircraft deliveries are extending aircraft service lives and supporting sustained MRO demand. Engine maintenance remains a key constraint as limited parts and repair capacity contribute to elevated costs and extended turnaround times, while longer aircraft service lives support continued aftermarket opportunities across avionics, wheels and brakes.
- Efforts to replenish U.S. munitions inventories are driving heightened demand for energetics at a time when domestic production faces capacity limitations and supply chain challenges. These pressures are driving investment in domestic production and additional suppliers, particularly for solid rocket motors and other critical propulsion inputs.
- Depleted U.S. missile and interceptor inventories are increasing pressure to accelerate weapons production, particularly across high-demand systems such as Patriot and THAAD. However, long production lead times and a concentrated supplier base continue to constrain how quickly manufacturers can increase output and rebuild inventories. At the same time, defense investment is increasingly emphasizing higher production volumes of lower-cost drones and layered counter-drone systems, with greater focus on procurement speed and cost per mission or interception.
- Strengthening U.S. defense capabilities in the Indo-Pacific remains a strategic priority, supporting continued investment in submarines, naval vessels, long-range missiles, advanced aircraft and resilient space systems.
